Zebra Mussels are a harsh reality in many waters. Similar to barnacles in how
they attach to boat bottoms, ship hulls, subsurface structures and surfaces.
Zebra mussels as a result of being in bilge water of commercial shipping have
been spread to many parts of the navigable world. The best way to prevent zebra
mussels from damaging your valuable boat or ship is to choose a bottom paint
that contains ingredients that will retard the zebra mussel's ability to adhere
to the hull or that will repel retard or kill off the zebra mussel when in
contact with the surface of the paint. This type of paint is typically referred
to as a biocide or copper ablative. The copper ablatibe paints primarily use
copper as the active ingredient that is offensive to the zebra mussel,
barnacles, algae, slimes and other opportunistic organic organisms that like to
ride for free. Zebra mussels on a ship's hull will decrease the hydrodynamics of
the craft and increase friction which increases fuel consumption, or for
sailboats wind consumption (remember you heard it here first) if there is such a
thing if not there is now. Keeping the dreaded zebra mussel from becoming one
with your craft and costing more fuel and engine wear is of utmost importance if
you will be sailing into zebra mussel infested waters. Zebra mussels cause
damage to boats, ships, power plant intakes, pipes, intakes, pumps, docks,
piers, navigational markers and many other subsurface structures and equipment
that on a global scale equates to easily billions of dollars a year.
Interestingly enough zebra mussels have been found to thrive on PCB's found in
some contaminated waterways. In areas with higher concentrations of PCB's in the
bottom sediments, zebra mussel populations can soar to such large numbers that
they clog intakes, foul pumps and block cooling water pipes for power plants.
Levels of encrustation are high on boat an ship hulls, props, rudders, docks,
piers, and anything left in the water an extended period of time. Protect your
investment with a proven biocide paint that will control zebra mussels and keep
your boat ship shape.
